Sizing Your Area Rug: Avoiding Common Pitfalls
As designers, we often get asked by folks: "How can I figure out the right rug size for my space?" The answer is somewhere between "It's a scientific process," and "You'll know it when you see it."
Most of us have walked into a room to find an area rug that's woefully undersized. But at the same time, no one wants to go overboard with a too-big rug that puts a dent in their decorating budget. So here is a starting guide for which common size of rug makes sense for which setting.
2x3 Rugs: Defining Entries and "One Person" Spots
These small rugs are perfect for those little nooks that need a touch of warmth and personality. Think of places like the entryway, where a 2x3 rug can welcome guests with a pop of color and catch dirt before it spreads throughout the house. They're also great in front of the kitchen sink.
3x5 Rugs: Bigger Entries and Baths
A step up in size, 3x5 rugs are still compact but offer a bit more coverage. They're excellent for smaller spaces like bathrooms, where they can add a cozy element without overwhelming the room. Picture a stylish 3x5 rug in front of a bathtub or shower, providing a comfy spot to step onto post-bath. They also work well in entryways.
5x8 Rugs: The Small Room Solution
The 5x8 rug is large enough to make a statement but not so big that it dominates the room. This size works best in small living rooms or offices, where it can anchor a seating or working area without swallowing up all your floor space. Place it under a coffee table with the front legs of your sofa and chairs resting on the rug to create a cohesive look. It's also a good choice for bedrooms, fitting well under a queen-size bed, extending out enough to step onto it when you wake up.
6x9 Rugs: A Step Up
A 6x9 rug, while not as common as the 5x8, offers a bit more coverage for those slightly bigger spaces. This size is a good choice for many dining rooms, where it can accommodate a table and chairs, making sure all legs stay on the rug even when pulled out. It's also a potential fit for mid-sized living rooms, adding a plush foundation underfoot and tying the furniture together.
8x10 Rugs: The Go-To for Living Areas
If you're looking to make a bold statement and avoid the "undersized" obstacle, the 8x10 rug is a wise starting point. This size is perfect for spacious living rooms and primary bedrooms. In a living room, an 8x10 rug can define the full seating area, with all or most furniture pieces comfortably resting on it. For bedrooms, it works well under a king-sized bed, extending on all sides to provide a soft surface around the bed.
9x12 Rugs: Large Rooms and Open Concepts
If you have a more spacious living room or an open concept seating area that needs definition, the 9x12 rug is a good choice. This size is great for open floor plans, offering ample coverage to delineate spaces. In a large living room, it can accommodate multiple seating areas or a sectional sofa, making the space feel cohesive and inviting. It's also perfect for formal dining rooms, where it can handle a large dining table and chairs with ease.
10x14 Rugs and Up: Grand Spaces
For those with even larger spaces, a 10x14 or larger rug brings an expansive touch of elegance. This size is perfect for grand living rooms, large primary bedrooms, or dining rooms that need substantial coverage. It can house entire furniture arrangements, ensuring that every piece of your room's decor is united under one beautifully cohesive design.
Layering Rugs
Layering a smaller rug atop a larger one is a fantastic way to add interest to your space. For example, place a 5x8 rug over a neutral 9x12 rug in your living room to create a focal point and introduce different textures or patterns. This technique works especially well in eclectic or bohemian styles but can be adapted to suit any decor. It's also a great way to cover more floorspace without overextending your budget, combining a large lower-priced neutral or natural grass rug with a more luxurious handwoven statement piece.
Room-by-Room Guide
Living Room: Go for a 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, or even 9x12 or 10x14 rug depending on the size of your space. Ensure that at least the front legs of your furniture are on the rug to create a unified look. For added style, consider layering a smaller rug on top of a larger one.
Dining Room: Opt for a 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, or 10x14 rug to fit your dining table and chairs comfortably. Remember, all chair legs should stay on the rug, even when pulled out.
Bedroom: A 5x8 rug is great for a queen-size bed, while a 6x9 or 8x10 rug works best for a king-size bed. For larger primary bedrooms, consider a 9x12 or 10x14 rug. Layering smaller rugs can add charm to specific areas like under a desk or reading chair.
Entryway: Small 2x3 or 3x5 rugs are ideal for entryways, providing a welcoming touch and a place to wipe your feet. Runners can add color and softness to hallways.
Kitchen: Place a 2x3 rug in front of the sink or stove for a splash of style and comfort where you stand the most.
Bathroom: A 3x5 rug can add warmth and texture to your bathroom, especially in front of the tub or vanity.
